FX has a new original series set in San Diego's own Ocean Beach or OB as the locals call it. Terriers does a pretty good job capturing the rather seedy, bohemian side of life in America's finest city. I liked the first episode quite a bit. Whether it will catch on fast enough to survive more than one season, I don't know. [read post]

General Kagan is "humbled" by her nomination. That's a fine thing to say and people often say it on these occasions, but I wonder what it means exactly. You say, the Chargers humbled the Redskins, say, meaning they put them in their place, but that's not what Kagan means, I don't think. She means perhaps that she doesn't really deserve the honor, that she is not worthy? In which case she means, I am so humble that I am saying I don't really… [read post]

Even at the risk of appearing a silly, cockeyed optimist later on, I agree with this. And similar sentiments from Paul Rahe. I think Obamaian bait and switch and overreach may have created an opportunity for a constitutional restoration unlike any since the Reagan administration and perhaps even more than that. I guess that a third of the people are well and deeply shocked by what the Dems have been doing and another 25 percent or so are not so shocked but still significantly alarmed. This fear and… [read post]

Please stop hurting us. On just one point, this whole ethanol thing is starting to get to me. I got to see inside of it a bit when I was a laboring oar in the Reagan administration. To call ethanol (biofuels, etc.) a scam is to do an injustice to all the hard working con artists in the world. Maybe, just maybe, we should not be paying big agribusiness subsidies so they can grow stuff people can't eat, so poor people starve. Financed with taxes that left… [read post]

Ken Burn's film The War, based on the first episode, is well worth watching. You may not learn much history if you are a WWII buff, but the documents he exposes -- photographs, film, and oral history style interviews -- are extremely interesting and frequently moving. A certain amount of predictable PC stuff, but not enough to ruin things. It's on public TV stations now. Activate your TiVo. [read post]

This is so unfair. I would be willing to say unexpected but dumb things if only I could have my own column in the NY Times. Here we learn our young President gets credit for the uprising in Tunisia, Egypt and across the Arab world. How, might well you ask? Not by doing anything. That would be so, so 20th century, pre- flat- world thinking. No, it is just by being who he is, young, handsome, and of color, that the O inspired this great movement toward, uh, freedom or something. Maybe he deserves… [read post]
