Here is a characteristically lovely and thoughtful talk by Daniel Hannan on why the shared political and legal culture of the English-speaking countries is unique, and why it was a historic mistake for Britain to abandon the Commonwealth - as in effect it did, and indeed as it was required (or bullied) to do as a condition of joining the European Union. Hannan is especially good on the common law, and its heritage of government subject to the law, rather than government as the omnipotent and… [read post]

Canada now has a conservative (or at least Conservative) majority government. The Canadian general election yesterday wiped out the once-invincible Liberal Party, which governed Canada for most of the twentieth century; and also devastated the separatist Bloc Quebecois. Stephen Harper's Conservatives increased their share of Parliamentary seats from a plurality of 143 (out of 308 seats) to a solid majority of 167. The Liberals are down to 34 seats, barely more than ten percent. The Bloc… [read post]

The British academic trade unions have again voted for a "comprehensive and consistent boycott" of all Israeli scholars and academic institutions: expressing an all-but-explicit hope for the extinction of the Jewish state. Bruce Kesler posts Steven Plaut's draft of how the British universities might have worded a boycott of Czechoslovakia in 1938:While we have tried other forms of persuasion, the racist regime in Czechoslovakia continues to abuse the human rights of the… [read post]

Paul Caron links to a National Jurist post reporting that law school faculties are 40% larger than ten years ago and the number of deans, librarians, and other full-time administrators on the teaching faculties has tripled. A law professor's typical teaching load has dropped from five courses per year a few generations ago to three courses today. Instapundit links to Caron's post, and rightly highlights the comments at the foot of Caron's post from indebted law students, graduates,… [read post]

Here are a couple of paragraphs from a lovely story in the Washington Examiner: "House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers of Michigan is outraged about the dozen staffers who accompanied U.S. Agency for International Development Director Rajiv Shah to a recent meeting on Capitol Hill. You should understand, though, that Conyers was not upset because Shah brought too many staffers along for the meeting with the 42 members of the Congressional… [read post]

David Bernstein reported in the Wall Street Journal on Monday about Human Rights Watch's latest effort in Saudi Arabia: A delegation from Human Rights Watch was recently in Saudi Arabia. To investigate the mistreatment of women under Saudi Law? To campaign for the rights of homosexuals, subject to the death penalty in Saudi Arabia? To protest the lack of religious freedom in the Saudi Kingdom? To issue a report on Saudi political prisoners? No, no, no, and no. The… [read post]

Stuart Taylor has it right, alas, about what is happening on all too many campuses:[The] cancerous spread of ideologically eccentric, intellectually shoddy, phony-diversity-obsessed fanaticism among university faculties and administrators is far, far worse and more inexorable than most alumni, parents, and trustees suspect... [T]he academics whose growing power and abuses of power concern me are... also ruthless in blocking appointment of professors whose views they don't like; are eager to… [read post]
