It violates human rights for The Catholic University of America to be Catholic or something. Just a thought: if you want to be in a place devoid of Christian symbols, go to a place other than one called The Catholic University.  [read post]

A melodramatic title-- I refer only to the beginning of the fire season here just east of Paradise.  I am  now getting what seems like at least weekly alerts from the email service of the friendly local Indian casino regarding a brush fire having broken out here or there, not far away.  It seems like it was fairly wet spring to me but I have also read the winter was not a wet one and so it could be a big fire season.  Lots of brush was burned out in recent fires, such as this one… [read post]

This is pretty good.   It is weird how in politics (at least current politics) it is almost impossible to be cynical enough to understand what is really going on.  It not just lies and hypocrisy, but lies within lies within lies, and hypocrisies that fold over themselves as many times as the steel in a Japanese sword. I suppose this makes sense in that complex iterative games are being played out, and as in war (just politics by other means) deception plays a central part.  This is… [read post]

Lots of ugly things spring to life. So it is for the "Arab Spring" as well. Spring makes it sound like Beautrix Potter and all the cute bunnies coming out. Think instead, well, just watch anything on the National Geographic Channel. It's a jungle out there. Bunnies, yes, and many kinds of snakes that eat them. Not to mention that bunnies are little breeding and pooping machines that will lay waste your garden. Yet another reason to appreciate our Framers and eighteenth century thought… [read post]

I've started taking melatonin as a sleeping aid, not every night, but when I remember. I should probably be taking something for my memory too. More and more vivid dreams are reportedly a side effect of melatonin use, and that seems to be the case for me. So far, I have had the following dreams on the popular hormone. In the first, I was a student a Hillsdale College who had skipped three weeks of a class on real number theory taught by Glenn Beck. He was not happy with me. The entire college… [read post]

This is interesting. There's something intriguing about the schizophrenic's psychotic interpretation of the world around him as directed at him, so to speak. The TV is not just on; it's speaking to him. Random events out in the world are actually orchestrated conspiracies directed at him. And yet we all do this to a degree. Some people, like politicians and other seekers of fame, are trying, it seems, to make the world realize that it is really all, or in important part, about them.… [read post]
