Reportedly, John McCain was planning on selecting Joe Lieberman for the VP slot, but was forced to abandon it by the strong opposition of religious conservatives.  While some might argue that McCain would have done well with Lieberman, my prediction is that he would be doing much worse.  Yet, this is who John McCain really is.  If he had his druthers, he would have selected a big government liberal who supports the Iraq War and the War on Islamic Extremism. … [read post]

Shale oil developed by an Israeli company.  Glenn call this potentially huge.  I would say so.  It is almost as if it comes out of Atlas Shrugged.  The story of Ellis Wyatt from Atlas Shrugged brings to mind another connection with Israel.  If the enemies of Israel ever do succeed in wresting Israel from its current occupants, Israel might consider doing what Ellis Wyatt did when the hoodlams in Atlas Shrugged stole his land: Destroying the improvements that Israel made --… [read post]

Assume that the Republicans win big next week. Then, the question is how to beat Obama. It is hard to beat a sitting President, but it can be done, especially if the economy is going badly. Here is the scenario. After the big defeat in 2010, Obama does not attempt to pivot or does not do a good job of it. This causes Hillary Clinton to conclude that he is vulnerable. So she resigns and primaries Obama. A primary challenger is a key ingredient to beating a sitting President -- ask Jimmy Carter and… [read post]

Glenn links to this story about a recent analysis of a tape of the Kent State shootings from 1970. This peaked my curiousity and so I read the lengthy Wikipedia article on the subject. How interesting! I must admit to horrible ignorance about the event. I had always been taught, simply, that peaceful students had been inexplicably shot by national guard troops. In a way, that is true, but in another way, quite false. If you too are ignorant of the events, take a look at the Wikipedia article. It is… [read post]

Wow, these explanations from Federalist 62 of phenomena in our world are quite impressive. Read this Clayton Cramer post. Really, a must read. (Hat tip: Instapundit). [read post]

An entertaining but I think correct answer is provided by Jeffrey Kasser in this Teaching Company course on the Philosophy of Science. Kasser writes: The best characterization I know of philosophy comes from one of my teachers: "Philosophy is the art of asking questions that come naturally to children, using methods that come naturally to lawyers." Tom mentions this short blog post on recess appointments by John Steele Gordon. It is a good piece. For my own work arguing that Gordon's position is actually the original meaning of the Recess Appointments Clause, see here. [read post]

How could the Obama Administration try to get Israel to sign the nonproliferation treaty and give up its nuclear weapons? Do they want the destruction of Israel? Well, there is a good chance that Bill Ayres and Jeremiah Wright do (in some form, presumably not through a nuclear holocaust, but through intimidiation and weakening). What about Obama? [read post]

I like reading Will Wilkinson, because I so often disagree with him. He is on the liberal wing of libertarianism, while I am on the conservative wing. His position, shared with Kerry Howley, that it is acceptable for libertarians to act (presumably with coercive force) against certain values held by people, such as sexism, is extremely problematic. And his willingness to see religious influence decreased, even if it will lead to more of a welfare state, is also disturbing. Now, he has a post talking… [read post]

Glenn Reynolds correctly predicted that the Obama White House's incompetence would result in claims that America is ungovernable. I am reading Steven Hayward's book, The Age of Reagan, and one of things he mentions is that Reagan inherited a presidency that was thought to be unable to govern America. But after Reagan's presidency that was not heard again. Until now. I wonder why. [read post]

The declarative version of the title of the post, rather than the inquisitive, is the thesis of a New Republic piece by Whitiker Chambers biographer San Tanenhaus.   He writes: Yet, even as the right begins to regroup, it is not clear that its leaders have absorbed the full implications of their defeat. They readily concede that the Democrats are in charge and, in Obama, have a leader of rare political skills. Many on the right also admit that the specific failures of the outgoing… [read post]

Tom's response to Posner's annoying discussion of the crisis in conservatism got me thinking.  What does it mean to say there is a crisis in conservatism?  There are at least three ways in which a political movement/ideology can have a crisis:     1.  It could have a theoretical problem - the theories underlying the movement might be unable to explain what the problems that the society/economy is suffering. … [read post]

Charles Krauthammer makes the case that victory is achieveable in Iraq.  He says, "After agonizing years of searching for the right strategy and the right general, we are winning."  He also notes that the Democrats refuse to admit the significant progress. I have not heard much from intelligent war critics recently.  I am genuinely curious what they would say.  I know all about their arguments that there should not have been a war, that it has… [read post]

A couple of interesting posts on legalizing prostitution.  First, there is evidence that condom use in the legalized brothels of Nevada is extremely high, whereas it is quite low among illegal prostitutes.  Adding to the problem for illegal prostitutes, they apparently have to give "freebies" to police and others to avoid arrest or violence in illegal settings.  Given this, one might ask why legalized prostitution is so rare.  This paper uses… [read post]

It is not just in Europe: A community debate over religious freedom surfaced in Western Pennsylvania last week when Dutch feminist author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who has lived under the threat of death for denouncing her Muslim upbringing, made an appearance at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Imam Fouad ElBayly, president of the Johnstown Islamic Center, was among those who objected to Hirsi Ali's appearance. "She has been identified as one who has defamed the… [read post]

Should deaf parents be allowed to select genes to ensure that their children are deaf?  My immediate and continuing reaction is no, absolutely not.  It may not be evil -- although it may be -- but it should not be allowed.  After all, if a deaf parent had a hearing child and then intentionally caused the child to become deaf through physical injury, we would certainly prohibit and punish that.  Are the gene selections so different?  That said, I recognize the issues are… [read post]

Cass Sunstein writes an interesting review in the New Republic of two books that claim that the terrorist threat has been overplayed for political purposes.  The books are Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Threats, and Why We Believe Them, by John Mueller, and What's Wrong With Terrorism, by Robert E. Goodin. Unfortunately, the review appears to be only available to subscribers.  Here is an excerpt: Goodin believes that public warnings… [read post]
