The roommate who did this should go to prison and the parents should sue him for millions. He can see how funny that is. This account is different however. [read post]

It sounds like Brooks gets it exactly right. I haven't read Frazen's latest novel, Freedom, and I'm not going to, but Brooks's description of the moral universe Frazen creates in it is just like my impression of it in The Corrections, Frazen's first novel (that I read anyway, and last too). I think the best thing is just to ignore these books by literati whose mission is to dump on the moral life of the middle class. I mean honestly, f*$% them. I mean, my life is probably a… [read post]

This is mildly amusing. Mostly about cap and trade and its (let us hope) imminent demise. But what I want to do is push back a bit on this meme that seems to be growing in the RWB, and that is, that we have taken too much of the danger out of childhood, and we should put it back in. WH Mead speaks nostalgically of the M-80s and cherry bombs he played with as a youth. Well, wait a minute. I remember my childhood and all the dangerous things we did, and many of us are lucky to be alive. We don't… [read post]

VDH comments on elite culture. Elites, the ruling class v. the country class, is a big meme these days. Rush and Glenn Beck are on about it; so is the RWB (that's right wing blogosphere). I don't know. It's true that academics tend to be uniformly and tediously PC, and your average big city law firm is going to be more blue than red. The one county in Idaho that votes Democratic is the one surrounding Sun Valley, a fashionable and very expensive resort, along the lines of Aspen or… [read post]

Social science is having a hard time proving fathers are a net good. My guess is this is because the researchers are inclined to want to show fathers are entirely dispensable. Alas, this is just a guess. Back in the bad old days before blogs, I was on some law prof email list where I ended up getting into a fight with this unbelievably unpleasant academic from Cambridge UK who held most violently that there was absolutely, positively no reason to think that fathers added anything to a family that… [read post]

Professor Rappaport's post of the Hitch reminds me of this book on Prohibition. It seems prohibition was a high water mark, so to speak, of progressivism. But before it, the US was evidently an astonishingly inebriated nation. We drank on average seven gallons of pure alcohol per year, which is the equivalent of two bottles of standard 80 proof liquor per week. And if I understood correctly, that's two per every man woman and child. Visitors from Great Britain and Europe, which were no… [read post]

This is some kind of spin within the spin. Of course perish the thought that anyone should enquire as to why Rush resonates with the clinging masses. This reminds me of the '80s and all the blather about how RR was a great communicator rather than somebody who actually had good ideas and the right direction. Maybe it's not the medium, but the message. [read post]

"I have a most peaceable disposition. My desires are for a modest hut, a thatched roof, but a good bed, good food, very fresh milk and butter, flowers in front of my window and a few pretty trees by my door. And should the good Lord wish to make me really happy, he will allow me the pleasure of seeing about six or seven of my enemies hanged upon those trees." --Heinrich Heine (hat tip BL) [read post]
