Seems to me it's not a bad idea to go on an arduous hiking trip (or whatever the equivalent would be for city-loving folk) with your intended. I don't count myself a BSU Bronco fan in world where some people drink orange and piss blue, so to speak. I am just one more guy who wanted them to win and who had the occasional fantasy of their ending up No. 1 and shoving it down the throat of Auburn or somebody. I was disappointed at how the game with Nevada turned out, you could say. My sister, an Idaho Vandal, was rooting for the Wolfpack. There is some bad blood between BSU and U of I. I would have to support Idaho against BSU for family… [read post]

Is this for real? Am I seriously going to have to be felt up the next time I fly and my family members too? I'm not sure how LWJ would react to this. Or my teenaged boys. Can't they just use their magic xray or something? [This is a family life update. Please do not read it.] My latest DIY project is building a garden box, which is about as basic as you can get. I used the concept from here. On the theory that bigger is better, I've made it 18 inches deep instead of 10 or 12. This will allow me to spend more money on potting soil. Grrrrrrrrrrr! Putting Sarah next to Geraldine is just the sort of evil right-wing manipulation of opinion we have come to expect Fox News to engage in and in my case at least it is very effective. Some grizzlies are cute and some are just scary. It's so weird you could almost think it is part of some sort of dialectic; not that I think it really is. Nothing is more clear to anybody who has been within a hundred miles of them that nothing and nobody are more cynical, mercenary, devoid of principle, vain, and narcissistic than show business and the people in it. Some GOP prognosticators seem to be getting a bit overheated predicting the biggest blowout since the Big Bang in the upcoming elections. Intrade provides a good reality check. Odds of the GOP taking the House: about 75/25. Of taking the Senate: 60/40 against. I expect the GOP will get a majority in the House, not do so in the Senate, and do OK in governors' races. No, I'm not talking about some weird sex thing, but this. This is the second or third time I have seen the colon, to wit, ":", used in this freakish manner. Putting a colon where you would not put even a comma, let alone a period or semi-colon: What is that about? I say we cry shrilly now and put an end to this abomination before it is too late.
