Let's see . . . We want Greece, Italy, Spain to produce more and sell their exports at lower prices to Germany and other Euro-nations not in such bad shape. How, how could we do that? I know! Stimulate demand in German by printing money there! Herr Doktor Professor Paul "More Cowbell" Krugman. This guy is killing me. Of course, perish the thought that the idea of a common European currency was a piece of hubristic folly from the get go. The drachma if it still existed would be… [read post]

This is sort of a family life update and the usual caution applies. A couple of months ago, the family unit and I vacationed in June Lake, a very pretty spot east of Yosemite National Park. It's a gorgeous lake tucked right at the base of some high mountains and is an easy drive to Mono Lake and other natural attractions. But this post isn't about exactly that. I grew up in Boise, Idaho in classic Western basin and range country. The Rocky Mountains run along Idaho's eastern border… [read post]

This is a rare thing -- a Judy Woodruff interview that is actually worth listening to. She tees up questions for a long time Texam Monthly editor, no doubt expecting to get answers critical to Rick Perry, and instead gets something like a journalist trying to be objective. She and her producers must have been very disappointed. But what Paul Burka said is the most interesting: JUDY WOODRUFF: What else would you say, Paul Burka, about Gov. Perry's -- you mentioned that he's aware, when he… [read post]

This is a new thing I had not heard of. I guess I don't keep up with my feminist developments. The idea seems to be for young women to dress "like sluts" and do take back the night sort of walks (which I remember from the seventies, so ancient am I). The idea is to make the point that just because a woman is dressed "like a slut" does not mean she is asking to be raped. The article refers to some social science to the effect that women who dress provocatively (let's… [read post]

Suppose this is true -- where should I invest my retirement funds? I don't see us making drastic cuts in entitlement programs. It could happen I suppose, but it never has before. [read post]

The measurement has changed. Somewhat relatedly, the freeways have been oddly empty the last couple weeks in San Diego. Like a "Friday lite" as the FM traffic reporters say, as it would be on a summer Friday. Except it's not Friday or summer; it's an April rush hour on T, W and Th. The only thing I can figure is that it's the high gas prices. I would not have thought demand for gas and driving was that elastic. [read post]

Where indeed. USN helicopters should already by the hundreds be ferrying supplies into unreachable areas. (I realize the Navy is at work, but they could be doing more, and would be if POTUS told them to). US smart bombs should already be destroying Lybian tanks. We don't appear to be exercising leadership, which is half of leadership. This is really, really bad. [read post]
