I don't see what's so difficult about this-- the fact that the right to choose abortion is resulting in many more girl babies being killed than boy babies.  Simply have some government organ (there's probably a loose one lying about under Obamacare) choose a number of boy babies at random, and kill them such that the ratio is back to 1:1.  And actually, why one to one?  Probably the ratio should reflect social justice and all that.  And why random?  Some… [read post]

Really; not a joke. Honorary chairperson here. I wish I could get my arms around, in an entirely metaphorical sense, the political psychological connection between (some version of) contemporary feminism on the one hand and contemporary progressive statism on the other.  Consider prohibition.  Temperance and feminism were completely intertwined.  Similarly there was something blatantly masculinist (if you will) about Italian fascism. You had the valorization of the martial virtues,… [read post]

Cool.  One of the nice things about where I live (in the sticks) is that it is well situated to observe spectacular moon rises.  This one on May 5 should be especially scenic. Jupiter and Venus in the night sky now.  I got a good view of this last night. [read post]

This is unbelievable.  Well, quite believable, unfortunately.  Here's a novel idea.  Groups of people interested in gardening and farming ought to be able to get together for a pot luck dinner without the government getting involved. [read post]

I completely agree with Maimon below about the "fascinating, chilling" quality of learning about the Nazis.  I do think somehow they reveal essential things about the nature of evil, and I agree with Maimon that the Hannah Arendt notion of the "banality of evil" has worn badly and indeed strikes me as deeply uninsightful.  Evil does occur in the most banal of settings, but to my mind it is more like the little black holes that physicists suggest can pop up anywhere.… [read post]

Can it really make sense from a tax point of view just to accumulate debt against your stock rather than to, say, sell a bunch of stock, buy tax free bonds, and live off the interest?  A question for Mark Zuckerberg. Yes, I'm pretty excited about the Facebook IPO, at least as a news event.  Whether I will plough through the S-1 is doubtful, but it's more interesting than the death of the EZ and the usual fare on CNBC. Sean Trende's take on Iowa. I hope he's wrong -- Iowa is just one data point. If the GOP is on the road to being a Santorum/Huckabee party, it ain't for me. That is, social conservativism plus economic populism isn't my cuppa. "Economic populism" is just fancy talk for those not on the public union gravy train getting a place at the table too. But ST is right that the modern Democratic party really is an alliance of the top say three percent with the bottom forty-seven… [read post]

A GOP presidential victory would be the end of the world, but in a good way. That's fine, but I'm not so sure it's going to be a GOP victory. [read post]

Sometimes in the public prints one reads of persons with fates so awful all one can say is, thank you Jesus, for not allowing me to walk down that dolorous path. Here in the NY Times today is described one such pock-marked road. Like many such roads, it's not so much the time on it that is bad, though it's probably not great. It's the looking back on it and realizing that you've spent ten or fifteen or twenty years in activity that can only charitably be described as vain. To the… [read post]

According to searching the corpus of Google Books. Interesting. Also here. Oh dear! It looks like noninterpretivism is getting its fanny handed to it! When did Rawls jump the shark? 2000 A.D. Brian Leiter is still on his way up though. Not Ronald Dworkin; peaked in 1998 or so. Liberty -- oh dear. Looks accurate. Hippies used to be a thing. Jesus making a come back? So let's see if I understand this. Doctor 1 tells Doctor 2 to perform a very painful and probably unnecessary procedure on shortly to be dead cancer patient. Doctor 2 says, are you sure that's a good idea? Patient's family says, no, no, don't! Patient says, no don't! Doctor 1 says, I'm the doctor and I say do it. So Doctor 2 reluctantly talks the family and patient into it, does the procedure, inflicts unnecessary pain, and the patient promptly gets horrible headaches,… [read post]

No you don't want to marry a model (or, beautiful but crazy is a bad combination). Everybody comes to San Diego sooner or later. Robert Frank's new book.
