Soon to be ex- person of congressionality David Obey helps make the case for the opposition. I listened to the fawning coverage of his decision not to stand for re-election on NPR and his self-congratulatory assessment of his career. I just about had to pull over to throw up. You might think that the fact he would re-elected only with difficulty from the district he showered porky benefits upon might induce a little self-consciousness about, perhaps just the ambiguity of his… [read post]

There is much controversy over the new Arizona state law that makes it a state crime to be in the state illegally under federal immigration laws. This is one of those cases in which one of my knees jerks one way and the other knee the other. It is symbolic of a free society that the people there (legally anyway) do not have to carry papers around with them and prove to the police their lawful status. Not for nothing is the demand for "Your papers!" (in German or French or Russian) redolent… [read post]

It really is just shocking that the former President (Clinton) of the party that just elected a guy who did indeed hang out with a guy (Bill Ayers) who actually did found a group, the Weather Underground, that bombed public buildings should now be delicately and not so delicately hinting that there is some connection between the OKC tragedy and people who go to rallies and shout that government spending is too high. This isn't just a beam in the eye; it's a beam through one's head.… [read post]

God bless Meagan. She evidently has enough patience to try to explain to those to whom it is not obvious that there really is a lot of discrimination against conservatives amongst our cultural elite. Me, I lost patience long ago trying to explain to the blind what red looked like. It is ironic yes that to the typical progressive, the fact that there are so few black professors is evidence of discrimination while the fact that there are so few conservative professors is equally obviously evidence… [read post]

I agree with this. If the federal government can compel a person to buy something as part of regulating interstate commerce, that's it for a government of limited powers. If it really is settled law that that the federal government can do this, I suggest we unsettle it. [read post]

It looks like the FBI has moved against some looney toons militias in America's dairyland. Just wait for the MSM to associate them with "tea baggers" and anybody not wild about health care. It could be something else but it looks like a plausible rumor at this stage. I am not hopeful that any distinctions will be made by our opinion leaders between those who think the Illuminati and the Joooz are running the world and those who think we should not create a debt that is half the size… [read post]

It's just dumb to treat failed suicide bombers come here from abroad to wreak havoc as if they were caught shoplifting. It's good to know it's not legally required either. In fact, the authority seems to be to the contrary. [read post]

But as a colleague of mine put it, if there's inflation, over-leveraged in a hard asset such as San Diego real estate is a good place to be. Unless it turns out not to be, which unfortunately seems entirely possible. [read post]

My Christmastime travel wish is always that it not be an ordeal. Between American airlines and four kids, you never know. We arrived prudently 90 minutes before departure time at SAN, checked in curbside, took children to the restroom, and then looked at the screen to discover the flight was delayed two hours. This does not bother my lovely wife Jeanne. It bothers me a little, but it's not as horrible as a missed connection at least. We once… [read post]
