Back in April, District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers delivered a scathing judgment finding that Apple was in “willful violation” of her 2021 injunction intended to open up iOS App Store payments. That contempt of court finding has now been almost entirely upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, a development that Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney tells Ars he hopes will “do a lot of good for developers and start to really change the App Store situation worldwide, I… [read post]

Historically, the biggest class-action lawsuits filed against video game companies have stemmed from antitrust and monopoly accusations, such as Nintendo's alleged price-fixing in 1991 or EA's football-series monopolies in the mid-'00s. But in some cases, like a filing over the 2013 shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, the suit's terms boiled down to little more than "the game stinks." That's what happened when two fans sued producer Sega and… [read post]

(credit: Christopher Thompson) An Australian man named Craig Wright told the world today he is "Satoshi Nakamoto," the man who created Bitcoin. Yet despite Wright's stunning declaration and the fact that it's backed by some of the most famous names in Bitcoin, others continue to cry foul. Wright gave interviews and demonstrations to the BBC, GQ magazine, and The Economist, and he published his own blog post claiming the name of Satoshi Nakamoto. He has… [read post]

Enlarge (credit: Getty) It's been a contentious journey, but Reddit's new API pricing will take effect on July 1. What started as a fight over creating an affordable option for valued third-party Reddit apps has evolved into a bitter battle pitting Reddit against indignant developers, mods, and users. Protests remain, but some users are now preparing to exit the platform, including some of Reddit's most seasoned moderators. Where does that leave third-party developers, some of which… [read post]

The commission "informed Apple of its preliminary view" that the company is violating the law, the regulator announced. This starts a process in which Apple has the right to examine documents in the… [read post]

A Russian developer behind the popular Grand Theft Auto V modding tool Open IV said the project is being killed off in the wake of a cease-and-desist demand from game maker Take-Two. The tool has paved the way for all types of GTA modifications. "Almost 10 years of my life were dedicated to @OpenIV and now the time is over," developer GooD-NTS tweeted. On the OpenIV website, GooD-NTS explained that he got a cease-and-desist letter on June 5 accusing him of "Russian laws… [read post]

Update: Take-Two says it targeted the Open IV project over "harassment issues," but was not targeting modding overall. "Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players," the company told… [read post]

Sometimes, the fierce competition in the booming crypto ransomware market works in the favor of the victims whose priceless data is held hostage. That appears to be what played out on Tuesday when the criminals behind a package known as "Mischa" published what's purported to be the secret crypto keys for the rival Chimera malware. "Earlier this year we got access to big parts of their deveolpment [sic] system, and included parts of Chimera in our project," the Mischa… [read post]
